I worked out a deal that keeps the insurance and registration affordable and reasonable, and it's happening.

on an SL600 is that? Love the R129, never had any insurance woes but those I had at 31-32 years old. The 600 was a pain in the butt but the 500 was solid I had. You have the hard top too?

One of the only cars for which " hydraulic fluid leaking from windshield" is not a made up problem. ;)

You guys might dig this:
Last year "Silver Arrow" edition SL500 in the shop now. A local dealer has it on consignment for $19k, but it's got a few needs so we have it for a bit.

It's kinda cool, with an engine-turned finish on the console & instrument cluster. This one's been painted though, and not too well. It's a cool shade of silver, and looks good from 10 feet, but the texture is all wrong & it's a bit dull under the shop lights. These things should have flawless paint, so it stood out right away.

Excellent! Not a hard fix, just one of many interesting R129 idiosyncracies.

oh yeah, should pop bright silver for certain. I have seen exactly one of these in person many years ago and what a way for the 129 to go out

Hard top included. This car needs minor work, but most importantly, is not rough around the edges. Needs thermostat and some trim pieces inside. I refuse to do major restoration, once the trim is fixed and it gets new throttle bodies and thermostat, its done. Tires are new, paint is mostly good, its a keeper. At 97k, Im only willing to try and double the mileage at this point.

1450 SL500s and 100 SL600s were made. There was one by me, I havent seen it in a long time, think it got sold. Nice cars, but not $19k nice.

easy to run that mileage out. Just one word to the wise, the top will not operate if there is a circuitry problem in the speedo cluster, which happens often. Typically can be fixed with an hour, a soldering iron and $5 in capacitors (I have spares of all of them too if you don't want to hunt them up). Also run far away if the check engine light is on when sold. Make sure that thing and the SRS lights up when you have the key to pos. 2, and both go out on startup (SRS might take a few seconds)

Airbags have been updated from the originals, and the SRS lights do come on. No check engine light, but it will likely need a coolant change with the thermostat job.
Some of the cluster lights are intermittent, but Im going to leave it for now and not do too much work all at once. It recently had water pump and other under hood work done, so I dont foresee any big issues coming anytime soon, just little things that will add up, so Ill do them a little at a time.

yeah just make sure you cycle that top quite a few times and make sure it doesnt hesitate! Great cars. I love them. I pine after a nice SL320 to run out to huge miles, but hard to find around here.

the top works great. It has one small spot that frays, but I know a guy who does interiors that can look at it. The only time the top struggles is in the cold. The car does need to sit in the sun for a little while before putting it down, but thats also to prevent damage to the rear windows. The top is original, so its important to just baby it along. Since Im buying it from my boss, its not like Im just getting a car and driving off, I can consult him about anything i need to. Ill post about how my boss got it when i do something more official about how i got it.

thanks. The other bonus is that i know a really really good indy mercedes shop thats also very reasonable for repairs. The guy who runs it used to be one of the top mercedes mechanics in the state, but the dealership closed, and he opened his own facility. I heard about him from a guy I met who said to not waste any time going somewhere else, the indy shop will be cheaper and better than anywhere else. From his stories of repairs and the costs, Im very inclined to believe him, so Ill be making an appointment there for a onceover and his opinion once everything settles down in a couple months.
